This is the overall premise of Outlast, a first-person survival horror game. OutlastĪn abandoned asylum in the middle of nowhere, haunted by the darkness of its past, and a journalist eager to capture the weird incidents that occur there. Granted, it’s a touch slow to get going, and the translation is a little shaky in spots, but neither of these flaws should detract from the game’s overall greatness. The contrast between the cutesy and colourful art style and some of the darker themes and imagery covered throughout the game works amazingly well, amplifying the creepiness to absurdly high levels. The end result is a game that is far more eerie than horrifying, but it is still well worth its place in the upper echelons of the free-to-play horror game genre.
